GENUINE CORE SAMPLES FROM THE HOMESTAKE GOLD MINE - LEAD, SOUTH DAKOTA
Bored from solid rock using a diamond drill for exploration purposes. Rock from this famous mine is extremely old - approximately 2.3 billion years!
The darker cores (#1 - #6) show small bands & pockets of gold-colored minerals. I of course cannot guarantee how much gold they contain. The Homestake would typically process tons of ore to get one ounce of gold, although miners would discover very rich ore from time to time.
Cores #1, #7, #8 and #9 were cut in half lengthwise with a rock saw to show the interesting structure of the ore. With a bit of polishing they would be quite attractive.
The size of the samples shown above range from about 2 & 1/2 to 9 inches in length.
With the Homestake long-since closed, these core samples are getting harder to find. This is your chance to add one to your collection.
